Solar collectors use special glass tubes called evacuated tubes, essential for their functioning. Each tube comprises two layers – an outer one made of robust borosilicate glass, resistant to hail impact, and an inner one coated with a selective layer for optimal solar heat absorption. A vacuum is created between these layers, eliminating heat loss. To sustain the vacuum, a barium getter is employed, which absorbs gases emitted during storage and operation.

The barium layer turns white if the vacuum is lost, serving as a visual indicator. These tubes ensure efficient solar energy absorption and are crucial components of solar collectors.

Unlike other solar collectors, evacuated tube solar collectors maintain efficiency even on cloudy days by absorbing energy from infrared rays that penetrate clouds. They are less affected by wind and low temperatures than flat plate collectors due to the insulating vacuum. Aligned in parallel, the tubes can passively track the sun's heat all day in a North-South orientation or track the sun all year in an East-West orientation. The round shape minimizes reflection, ensuring constant radiation exposure throughout the day. Unlike flat collectors, the round shape allows for optimal radiation absorption, maximizing efficiency from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, regardless of the sun's angle.
